Surrey Young Carers is a countywide group of young carers aged from 12 upwards, who meet at regular intervals throughout the year to give their views on matters about the service SYC provide.
It is important that the service we offer to them is geared to their actual needs and not their perceived needs. To achieve this, they are asked their views on recruitment (sitting in and interviewing prospective workers),the website, publicity materials , applying for funding, as well as being asked their opinions on various subjects from other professionals. We also started our own magazine – PSYCIC, which has articles written by both young carers and the staff at SYC.
They also are asked to give their views at various meetings and presentations – Celebration of Youth and Youth Parliament are two examples. We provide transport to all the meetings, refreshments, training opportunities, and the chance to meet other young carers.
Did I mention we also have fun?! We go out for social events – just to get together and chat.
