| Action for Carers (Surrey) is conducting research into the lives of 16 - 24yr old carers, who have different needs to younger or older groups. |
| We want to find out the extent of barriers to accessing resources, needs, and what we should do differently to help carers in this age group. Maybe we should provide advice on employment and your rights, or how you go about gaining access to education or apprenticeships?
In 2010 Surrey Young Carers received a donated fund from Team Charities to support carers living in Surrey. After on-going discussions and involvement with the fundraisers it was agreed that SYC would use the money to commission a one year research and development post looking into the needs of young adult carers aged 16-24 years and current local service provision.
This valuable piece of research will link to national findings by Saul Becker and other UK based Projects who are already working effectively with this hidden group of carers. Lindsay Constable was employed in February 2011 and will be making recommendations in an end of year report in how carer services and commissioners can better engage with the specific needs of young adult carers. |
