School can provide challenges for many young people, but for those who have a caring role at home the school environment can provide additional problems at times. Surrey County Council and Ofsted are highlighting the need to identify, safeguard and support this often vulnerable group as over 20% of young carers have difficulties with their education. For children living with a family member with a drug or alcohol dependency, this proportion is estimated to be at 40% (Source: Dearden & Becker, Young Carers in the UK, 2004).

| Surrey Young Carers can assist schools in supporting their students by providing, as a free service: |
 |
Consultations, briefings within INSET days and staff meetings |
 |
Assembly talks to students |
 |
Primary and secondary level PSHE materials |
By raising awareness in this way, schools are more able to address the issues affecting young carers such as attendance, behaviour,
achievement and the school’s communication with parents.
SYC Schools Workers are on hand to advise and assist pastoral staff and to provide listening support, advocacy and information for the students. |
